One year to the week after Southampton freshman Nash Warren threw a no-hitter against Greensville County, the Eagles returned the favor in an 11-1 victory. This time around, Greensville’s Shaheem Anderson sat down 11 Southampton batters in the six inning contest.

“We struggled mightily in the second inning, and all day at the plate,” said Southampton manager Wes Griffith.

The Eagles (2-0, 1-0 in the Tri Rivers District) started that second frame off with a seeing eye single up the middle against Indians’ starter Jesse Griggs.

Another soft liner down the third-base line put runners on first and second base, and a walk loaded the bases. Two errors and a base knock later, the Indians found themselves in a 6-0 hole.

Griggs was replaced by sophomore Wesley Pierce in the third. Pierce kept the Eagles’ bats at bay for the next three innings, allowing only one unearned run. The Eagles, aided by five Southampton errors, pushed four more runs across the plate in the top of the sixth to put the game in mercy rule territory.

The Indians (0-1, 0-1) registered their only run in the bottom of the fifth inning, when sophomore Brendan Simms opened the frame with a leadoff walk. Two infield errors eventually allowed Simms to score from first.

Southampton traveled to Windsor on Thursday. Results of the game against the Dukes were not available as of deadline.
