Chargers, Raiders battle on diamond

The Southampton Academy and Isle of Wight Academy baseball teams matched serve for most of Thursday’s contest. That is, with the big exception of the Chargers’ Rylee Williams — working on just two days’ rest — giving up eight runs in the second inning on several hits.
The Raiders were able to keep pace with Isle of Wight’s efforts from then on out, as Brynner Porter was one out away from completing the game in the 12-5 win. Andrew Lowe came in to face one batter and dealt a strikeout.
The Chargers had their opportunities with 11 hits and drawing two walks, but they left nine base runners holding the bag. After Williams was run from the game, Noah Pye came in to relieve him for the remaining four innings. He gave up four runs, walked two and struck out four.
Porter pitched 6.2 innings, had seven strikeouts and walked two. One of the five runs allowed was unearned.
For the Raiders, Matt Rose was 3 for 4 with three singles and 3 RBIs. Lowe and Ethan Edwards were 2 for 4 with 2 RBIs. Paul Parker, hitting leadoff, scored three times on just one hit.
Isle of Wight’s Pye was a perfect 4 for 4 at the plate with 2 RBIs. He also had a double and stole a base. Carson Robertson was 3 for 4 with an RBI. Dylan Robertson was 2 for 4 with 2 RBIs.
Earlier in the week, the Raiders traveled to Blackstone to face Kenston Forest School. Southampton won that meeting 13-2. Jack Smith picked up the win on the mound for his first victory this season, allowing only three hits. Matt Rose went 3 for 4 at bat and had 5 RBIs, launching two home runs in the process. The Raiders accumulated 10 hits in the game.
The Chargers had a doubleheader with Broadwater Academy earlier this week. They won the first game 8-3 and the second 4-3. Williams won the first five-inning contest, completing the game and striking out three in the process. He walked five. Alec Wonders also completed his five-inning contest, earning one of the runs, allowing two hits and striking out three. Over the double header, Carson Robertson was 3 for 6 with 3 RBIs. Adam Webb hit a home run in game one.
The Raiders moved to 14-1 for the season and will travel to Nansemond Suffolk Academy on Saturday to play a non-conference game at 11 a.m. against the Saints.
Isle of Wight is 8-5 and will travel to Portsmouth on Monday afternoon to face the Alliance Christian Academy Falcons at 4:30.
