Having previously located and determined that all of the underground power and sewage lines are deep enough that they would not be impacted by the maintenance project, the Virginia Department of Transportation has completed most of its ditch improvements along the intersection of Cypress Bridge Road and Statesville Road.

The next plan of action is to begin work in the coming weeks enlarging the intersection by filling in the old ditch and adding a 15-foot turn lane. This will give the intersection a better turning radius, enabling tractor trailers to make a right turn and avoid the town of Newsoms.

VDOT hopes to have the improvements completed by the middle of May, according to the update given to the Southampton County Board of Supervisors by assistant residency administrator Jerry Kee and later confirmed by spokesperson Laurie Simmons. As previously reported, the project will not affect traffic because work will completed at night and the vehicles will be moved out of the way when not in use.
