While Windsor’s E.J. Bankson and Haley Delgado combined to pitch a one-hitter, the pair gave up seven runs to the Southampton High School Lady Indians because they issued 17 walks in the Lady Dukes’ narrow 8-7 victory on Tuesday.
“That was very uncharacteristic of the two pitchers,” said Windsor head coach Sean Wade. “It was one of the strangest and wildest games I’ve ever been apart of. How we won that game is beyond me.”
After pulling Bankson early, Wade put her back in during the bottom of the fourth inning and no runs were surrendered to Southampton beyond that. But the Dukes were still behind at that point 7-2.
During the rough stretch, catcher Brittany Wade came up with several bases loaded blocks on pitches in the dirt to keep the score reasonable. Second baseman Peyton Gay also helped keep the game in reach with four assists to home.
Then, it was the batters’ turn. Sidney Carter, with two outs recorded in the seventh and a tied ball game, got one in for a hit and proceeded to steal a base.
Madison O’Brien, recently brought up from JV, followed that up with a double to drive in the go ahead and eventual winning run.
Kelsey Searcy, Morgan Whitley and Gay were 2 for 4 at the plate, and O’Brien was 2 for 3.
The Dukes (7-3) will first host the Greensville County Lady Eagles (7-3) on Monday, and follow that up on Tuesday traveling to Emporia to play the same team. First pitch for both games is set for 4:30 p.m.
