Practice fire prevention year-round

Last weekend’s house fire in Courtland brought to mind that fire prevention is something that needs to be done year-round, not just during designated weeks or months to the cause.
As we’ve since learned, the fire inspector has determined that an aged electrical system was the cause, not through any direct human error. After all, how many of us think about wiring getting too old or frayed for safety?
There was no one living in the house when the blaze reportedly began upstairs. Thankfully, a neighbor caught sight of the incident and called firefighters, who were able to salvage the building.
Based on this incident, we recommend the following for readers whether they own or rent:
• If you live in a place that’s been around several decades, consider hiring an electrician to inspect wiring, connections and outlets for potential problems. Renters can contact their landlords for a history of the apartment or house to help determine if such inspection is necessary;
• Regularly check smoke detectors and annually replace batteries; if you don’t yet have such devices, buy and install them as soon as possible;
• Develop an escape route or two in the event of a fire. Families can also practice fire drills from time to time so that everyone will be prepared, but not panic; and
• If you’re not sure what more could be done, contact your local fire department for other ideas.
The American Red Cross (www.redcross.org) also offers a home safety checklist, with suggestions such as keeping a watchful eye while cooking or avoid smoking in bed.
We’re sure you’ll agree that following suggestions like these can reduce or eliminate fire and smoke that damages, injures or kills.
