It’s refreshing to comment on police who are highlighted for their service, and not accused of misdeeds.

During the Windsor Town Council meeting earlier this week, two members of the police force were recognized for their professionalism.

Based on nominations from the officers’ peers, First Sgt. R.D. Riddle, interim police chief, presented Det. Sgt. G.P. Jernigan and Officer R.B. Swan with plaques signifying their work in the past year. Jernigan was noted particularly for helping to save the life of an elderly man at the courthouse by performing CPR in January. With the help of a Isle of Wight County deputy, they stabilized the patient until a rescue unit could arrive. That man is alive today because of Jernigan and the unidentified deputy.

Swan, who came on board in April of last year, was praised for quickly acclimating himself to duties and stepping up to the proverbial plate when work needed to be done. His coworkers named him Officer of the Year.

Riddle reported that Jernigan said he was just doing his job, and we bet Swan feels the same.

Nevertheless, we agree that such service merits a little extra recognition as a token of thanks.
