At its annual organizational meeting, the Southampton County Public School Board on Monday evening reappointed Dr. Deborah Goodwyn and Jim Pope as chairman and vice chairman, respectively. Goodwyn was opposed by Bill Worsham, who was nominated by Wayne Smith, but will remain with the gavel after a 5-2 vote. Pope was unopposed, but Smith also voted against his return.

“It’s really exciting, and I’m really appreciative that my fellow school board members have faith in me,” Goodwyn said.

Pope was also grateful for the opportunity to serve another year in that capacity.

“I would like to thank my fellow board members for their support in reappointing me vice chairman, and I look forward to working with them in having another successful year at Southampton County Public Schools,” he said.

Both Goodwyn and Pope, as well as all other members of the board, will continue to be paid $5,000 per year, with the former receiving an additional $300 and $0.32 per mile in travel compensation during her term as chair. Additionally, the school board will continue to meet on the second Monday of each month at 7 p.m. in the Southampton County Wigwam.
