At City Council’s meeting on Monday night, Chief Vince Holt, Director of Emergency Services, presented to the council a VML Defensive Driving Program he wanted Mayor Raystine Johnson-Ashburn and City Manager to sign off on.

The program is called “Where the Rubber Meets the Road” campaign and it will be no cost for the city.

WTRMTR campaign is to help assist members with building fleet safety programs to mitigate loss to vehicles, people and property through their fleet risk management training efforts.

The program’s contract says that it is designed to establish a defensive driving train-the-trainer program utilizing nationally recognized training methods and products. The members who become trainers will be qualified to effectively teach defensive driving principles to their own entity’s drivers, using a variety of nationally recognized training products. Campaign participants will have free access to training materials reserved exclusively for this program, which can be used to achieve the program’s goals.

Those members who successfully complete their first year agreement by meeting their training and program development and implementation goals will be eligible to receive a five percent credit on their auto liability coverage.

The program will be available to any city employee, but will be mandatory for all city drivers.

Holt said, “This program is a win-win and will compliment what we are already doing and provide better training.”

All of city council agreed that they were excited about the WTRMTR campaign and the Mayor and City Manager will be signing the contract.
