COURTLAND — George Clayton Bryant, 70, passed away in his home on Friday, Sept. 18, 2015, surrounded by his wife, son and daughter-in-law.

Born in Franklin, Virginia, on May 17, 1945, he was a son of the late Marvin Roy Bryant and Ruth Hufton Bryant. He is also predeceased by two brothers, Stanley and Garland.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 45 years, Dorothy McCormick Bryant; his son, David Alan Bryant (Jessica) of Quinton; and a very special grandson, Adam Christopher Bryant. He also leaves behind one sister, Maxine Davie of Virginia Beach; two brothers, Lloyd Bryant of Virginia Beach and Truman Bryant of Courtland; and many nieces and nephews.

After several years in Franklin Civil Air Patrol, where he met Dorothy, George (Clayton) entered the U.S. Air Force, retiring as a tech sergeant after 21 years of service. He served a tour of duty at Cameron Bay, South Vietnam, where he came in contact with Agent Orange, which is believed to have been the cause of the cancer that took his life.

He returned to the area after retiring and became a member of Courtland Baptist Church.

A niece called him “Dumbo” while out shopping in Wichita, Kansas. In later years, a great-niece called him “Bumbo” and he is still fondly called “Bumbo” by his sisters-in-law, grown nieces and their children. He will always be our “Bumbo.”

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 25, in Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery, Suffolk.
