Southampton County Public Schools received an $8,000 grant from Franklin-Southampton Charities for Early Intervention, Director of Accountability and School Improvement Deborah Hicks announced at Monday evening’s school board meeting. The grant will address the remediation needs of students who did not score well on the Standards of Learning tests last school year.

“This early intervention elementary after-school tutoring will strengthen the academic skills and mastery of content,” Hicks said.

She explained that the students who scored 399 and below on their SOL tests are the target group.

“They’re just about there,” Hicks said. “A couple more correct answers and they would have been more successful.”

Superintendent Dr. Alvera J. Parrish said that students are broken up into tiers based on the score, with 399 to 375 considered Tier II and 374 and below considered Tier II.

“We’re required by the state to identify these students in this manner to provide the instruction that they need,” superintendent Dr. Alvera J. Parrish said. “The state looks at the group data specifically, so we have to implement that at the local level.”

Tutoring began on Oct. 5, and will continue after school through Thursday, Dec. 17.
