CHESAPEAKE — Joe D. Anderson, 82, passed away Thursday, Nov. 19, 2015, in his home.

Born in Norfolk, Virginia, he was the son of the late John and Ida Anderson. He was also predeceased by his wife of 63 years, Nancy C. Anderson.

He attended Millfield Baptist Church, Ivor.

He started a career in law enforcement with the Norfolk County Sheriff’s Office, and later retired from the Chesapeake Police Department after 28 years of service. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police for 30 years, the Police Association for 50 years, where he earned the Lifetime Membership, and the Chesapeake Police Auxiliary Unit for 30 years.

Additionally, Joe was a volunteer firefighter for the Chesapeake Fire Department, Station No. 7 for 20 years. He was also a volunteer firefighter in the town of Ivor for 20 years, and remained an honorary member of the department until his passing.

He was a past-president of the Ivor Ruritan Club. He was the security officer for the Southampton Motor Speedway for 19 years. Joe will be remembered by many for his devotion to various organizations and the countless barbeque meals provided to those in the community.

He is survived by his children, Michael Anderson (Sarah), Carol Jean Felts (Bob), Sharon Braziel and Karla Kinsey; a sister, Patsy Warren (Sonny); 14 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

The funeral service was conducted at 11 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 23, in Oman Funeral Home & Crematory, Chesapeake. Pastor Brooks Gale officiated. The interment followed in Chesapeake Memorial Gardens.

The family received friends from 9:30 a.m. to 10:45 a.m., prior to the service at the funeral home.

The family would like to offer sincere gratitude to the nurses and staff at Medi Home Health and Hospice, as well as special caretakers, Kim, Nadine and Gina for the love, care and compassion shown to Mr. Anderson.
