GREENSBORO, N.C.-On May 30th, 2011, Peggy H. Wilkins of Greensboro, formerly of Franklin, VA made the transition to be with her Lord and savior Jesus Christ in her heavenly home.
Peggy, a retired educator from the city of Franklin Public Schools was a recipient of many awards and honors. In 1976, she received the Distinguished Service Award from the Franklin City Council. She was honored as an Influential Woman of the Year by Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, INC in 2009 as having a positive impact on the youth within the City of Franklin. Also in 2009, she was honored as A Living Legend with the Black Heritage Program.
Peggy served as Head Basketball coach at both Hayden and Franklin High Schools. As head coach her teams won many District, Regional and State Championships in her 22 year career. In 1981, they were the state, regional and district champions. Many of the young ladies under her guidance went on to receive Athletic scholarships as well as All-State, All-Regional, All-District and Player of the year honors. Peggy had a successful coaching career and was named Coach of The Year on several occasions. Her overall record of 334 wins and 62 losses ranks as the best record in Virginia High School Basketball history. As a result of her outstanding Achievements, in June 2008 the Franklin High School Gym was renamed, The Peggy H. Wilkins Gymnasium in her honor. Peggy left a winning legacy for girls basketball throughout the region.
Peggy was a loving Sister, Aunt and Friend who loved life. Her motto was “Always treat people the way you want to be treated-with kindness”. Though she did not have children of her own, she was a mother figure to her many nieces, nephews and students.
She was a graduate of James B. Dudley Senior High School and upon receiving her Degree from North Carolina A&T, she furthered her studies at Virginia State University. After retiring from teaching and coaching, she volunteered to coach the girls junior varsity basketball team and assisted with the boys Junior Varsity basketball Team. She also was a substitute teacher on occasion.
When she arrived back home in 2009 she quickly won over the staff and most of the residents at the Greensboro Retirement Center where she resided with her charm and unique personality.
She is preceded in death by her husband, McKenzie Wilkins formerly of Jacksonville, Florida and her Parents, Aubrey and Marie Hughes of Greensboro, North Carolina. She leaves to mourn her passing a Brother, Aubrey Hughes Jr. of Chester, South Carolina, 3 sisters, Frances Gripper(Willie) of High Point, North Carolina, LaFleta Woods(Boyd), Gloria Hughes, both of Greensboro, one Aunt, Doris Rodriquez of Winston-Salem, North Carolina and a host of nieces, nephews, grand nieces, and grand nephews that she loved dearly. She also leaves to cherish her memory many wonderful cousins and friends.
