Virgie J. Duke

WALTERS — Virgie Joyner Duke, 93, passed away on Dec. 1, 2015.

Mrs. Duke was born in Southampton County, and was a longtime resident of Walters. She was a daughter of the late W.W. and Dana Carr and was also predeceased by her husband, Elisha Willard Duke, and a sister, Ola Mae Carr.

Mrs. Duke was a member of Mt. Carmel Christian Church for 74 years where she was a former Sunday School teacher, deaconess and founder of the Golden Age Club. In later years she attended Franklin Congregational Christian Church.

She was an avid horse woman who loved to ride her horses in local parades and enjoyed fishing, reading and gardening. After graduating from Carrsville High School, she worked at Jones-Hayes Department Store in Franklin until she married in 1946.

She leaves to cherish her memory two daughters, Wendy D. Stephenson (Donnie) and Penny C. Duke all of Walters; two grandchildren, Dana Roderick (Anthony) of Walters and Leslie W. Cradic (Jason) of Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania; and one great-grandson, Wyatt Duke Roderick.

The graveside service will be at 11 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 4, in Mt. Carmel Christian Church Cemetery with the Rev. James H. Hyatt Jr. officiating.
