Although no one was hurt, an Ivor man was arrested this past Sunday on charges of trying to maliciously hurt people with guns.
Robert Lee Winnegan of the 8000 block of Green Level Road was taken into custody in the early evening after deputies responded to a call of shots fired in that vicinity.
Lt. Tommy Potter of the Isle of Wight County Sheriff’s Office released details about the incident in an emailed announcement on Wednesday afternoon. Later in a phone conversation, Potter said, “Deputies have responded several times to this address. Winnegan has feuds with other neighbors. [On the day of the incident] He accused one of riding his bicycle through his property. There was an exchange of words and [reportedly] he [Winnegan] pulled a gun and shot twice at a neighbor.”
Potter added that another neighbor came to find out what was happening, and Winnegan shot at that person as well. Then a third person arrived and he fired at her.
“When he ran out of bullets, he went inside to get a rile,” Potter said. “Someone in the house took the gun away. Deputies later recovered several bullets and other weapons.”
The charges are:
• 3 Counts of attempted malicious wounding
• 3 Counts of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony
• 3 counts of reckless handling of a firearm.
Winnegan was taken before a magistrate and a $7,500 bond was set. He was later released on that bond and will be arraigned later. This matter has also been referred to the Isle of Wight County Commonwealth’s Attorney for review.
