As part of School Board Appreciation Month, the Southampton County School Board was honored at Monday evening’s meeting with a resolution from Gov. Terry McAuliffe and treats from the district’s teachers and principals.
“We want to say ‘thank you’ for a job well done,” superintendent Dr. Alvera J. Parrish said. “We thank you for your time, efforts and your commitment to provide a quality education for all students of Southampton County Public Schools.”
Board members are chairman Dr. Deborah Goodwyn, vice chairman Jim Pope, Lynn Bradley, Denise Bunn, Carolyn Modlin, Florence Reynolds, Donna Rountree, Christopher Smith Sr. and William Worsham.
“We do this for the children,” Modlin said. “We appreciate just going into the schools and seeing the children succeed.”
Pope echoed that sentiment, and also lauded the teachers and principals in attendance.
“Our appreciation goes back to you,” he said. “There’s a lot of hard work that goes into getting those kids prepared, and all of you should be commended and thanked.”
Bunn said that she’s just as proud of the accomplishments of the school’s students as she is her own children.
“I can honestly say that the things that stay on [my refrigerator] are the things we get from the children [at Southampton],” Denise Bunn said. “I still have a Christmas card from Capron from two years ago a child sent to me still on there.”
Every school board member was recognized last year by the Virginia School Board Association for their dedication, time and hard work, most notably Goodwyn, who received the VSBA’s Award of Distinction.
