Republican Donald Trump and Democrat Hillary Clinton inched closer to capturing their party’s presidential nominations during Tuesday’s primary elections, as both candidates secured delegates in Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Massachusetts, Tennessee and Virginia. Trump and Clinton were also declared the winner in Vermont and Texas, respectively.

Local results mirrored that of the state, as Trump and Clinton received the most votes at precincts in the City of Franklin and the counties of Isle of Wight and Southampton. Clinton was popular among voters in Western Tidewater, securing 78.7 percent of the Democratic vote; Trump received 42.6 percent of the Republican vote.

Republican Senator Ted Cruz (Texas) and Democratic Senator Bernie Sanders (Vermont) each picked up wins in their home states, but trail Trump and Clinton by a significant margin nationally and locally. So does Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, whose lone win came at the Minnesota caucuses.

Rubio was the second-most popular Republican candidates in Western Tidewater with 30.1 percent of the vote, while Cruz finished a distant third with only 14 percent. Sanders, meanwhile, finished the day with 20.6 percent of the vote.

8,944 Republican and 5,684 Democratic votes were cast locally on Tuesday, though 17 were for candidates no longer running but still on the ballot.

• Marco Rubio — 584 votes, 26.8 percent
• Ted Cruz — 310 votes, 14.2 percent

Western Tidewater (8,944 votes)
• Donald Trump — 3,813 votes, 42.6 percent
• Marco Rubio — 2,691 votes, 30.1 percent
• Ted Cruz — 1,254 votes, 14 percent
