ISLE OF WIGHT
The Southampton Academy soccer club recorded its fourth shutout of the season on Monday night, as the Raiders easily defeated Isle of Wight, 4-nil, in their first match following spring break.
Senior Seth Edwards placed a strike past the outstretched arms of the Isle of Wight goaltender in the first minute to set the pace for the remainder of the match, while junior Emery Weist scored on a header off of an Edwards corner kick to put Southampton Academy ahead 2-nil just before the half.
Weist, son of head coach Jamie Weist, added another after the intermission, dribbling past several Isle of Wight defenders before putting the ball in the back of the net.
Keeper Chris Fly made a number of leaping saves to keep the Chargers off of the board throughout, and freshman Will Belmonte capped the scoring for the Raiders with a goal from beyond the penalty box. Southampton Academy moved to 4-2 overall, 3-1 in the Virginia Colonial Conference, with the win.
The junior varsity squad, meanwhile, dropped their match against the Chargers, 5-1.
After surrendering brief 1-nil lead — a well-placed direct kick by freshman Ford Fox from 25 yards out into the upper 90 — Isle of Wight scored five unanswered goals.
The varsity team returns to the pitch today for non-conference action with Fuqua, and the junior varsity will hold a scrimmage against Surry on Friday.
