TARBORO, N.C.
A man wanted in connection with a robbery in Southampton County on Christmas morning and a shooting in Murfreesboro, North Carolina, last weekend was taken into custody on Monday. Antwoine Vaughan, 29, of Murfreesboro, was found hiding at the residence of a female acquaintance on Vinson Drive in Tarboro, North Carolina.

“We receiving information he was there, and a coordinated effort between multiple law enforcement agencies was put into place to bring Mr. Vaughan to justice,” Hertford County Sheriff Juan Vaughan said.

The Tarboro Police Department, Greenville Police Emergency Response and Violent Crime Apprehension Team and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation Fugitive Task Force assisted the investigation.

“They were able to set up a strong perimeter around the apartment building where it was believed that Mr. Vaughan was hiding,” Sheriff Vaughan said. “Using a megaphone, he was ordered to come out and surrender. [He] chose to attempt to escape by jumping out of a second-story window of the apartment, but the officers had him surrounded by the time he hit the ground.”

Vaughan was arrested and transported back to Hertford County, where he faces three felony counts of attempted murder, one felony count of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, one felony count of conspiracy and misdemeanor counts of discharging a firearm into an occupied dwelling and discharging a firearm into an occupied vehicle. He is currently being held under a $975,000 secured bond in the Hertford County Detention Center.

The three other suspects involved in the March 25 shooting — 22-year-old Devonte Smallwood, 30-year-old Earl Lamont Powell and 20-year-old Shenndoah Perry — were taking into custody on March 28. They were found hiding at a residence in Northampton County, North Carolina.

All four stand accused in this case of ambushing a man, woman and their child in the vehicle. A disagreement earlier in the day between the parties prompted the men to hide behind the victims’ mobile home and fire shots into their car as it pulled into the driveway. Both victims suffered gunshot wounds to the face and head, though the woman was able to drive to the police department and notify authories. The 2-year-old was unharmed, but a bullet hole was found in his drink cup.

Vaughan will be extradited to Southampton County following his sentencing in North Carolina, according to Major Gene H. Drewery, spokesman for the sheriff’s office. He will face charges of abduction, burglary, use of a firearm in commission of a felony, breaking and entering with intent to commit a felony and eluding police.

Vaughan was one of five armed men in masks who forced a woman and her daughter into a bedroom and stole presents, cash and credit cards from a home in Adams Grove on Christmas morning. The other suspects — Jarvis Allen Holly, 25, of Murfreesboro; Derrick Edwards, 35, of Conway, North Carolina; Timothy Cherry, 29, of Woodland, North Carolina; and A.J. Britt, 24, of Como, North Carolina — have all been taken into custody in recent months.

“I would like to thank my officers, along with the other agencies involved, for their work on this case,” Sheriff Vaughan said. “It makes me happy to know that this violent criminal is now off the streets and no longer possess any danger to the public.”
