ISLE OF WIGHT
The Southampton Academy baseball team topped Virginia Commonwealth Conference rival Isle of Wight Academy on Friday afternoon. The highly anticipated matchup between the two top-ranked teams in the Virginia Independent School Athletic Association’s Division III was hardly competitive, however, as the Raiders easily dispatched the Chargers, 11-6.

Southampton Academy’s Jack Smith opened the scoring in the top of the first inning with an RBI single to plate Andrew Lowe.

Isle of Wight fought back to take the lead in the bottom of the frame, adding two runs on a Dylan Robertson double. However, the Chargers’ lead would be short lived. A five-run third inning featured a three-run home run by Ian Mizelle to give Southampton Academy the lead for good.

The Raiders tacked on two more insurance runs in the top of the sixth and three more in the top of the seventh to extend the lead to 11-2.

A three-run home run by Alex Wonder in the bottom of the seventh inning gave the Chargers some hope, but Southampton Academy pitcher Andrew Lowe closed the door. Lowe picked up his fourth win of the season, striking out six in the complete-game effort.

The Raiders improved to 10-2 on the season with the win, while the Chargers dropped to 7-4.

Both teams were in action again on Monday, knocking off United Sports Academy and Peninsula Catholic, respectively.
