This week is National Police Week — a week during which those law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others are honored and remembered by departments and offices all across the nation.

“This week is a time for reflection upon our chosen career in public safety, it is a time for members of law enforcement and citizens alike to honor and pay respect to the men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their communities,” Capt. Tim Whitt of the Franklin Police Department said. “This week stands as a reminder to all that there are brave people who selflessly place themselves in harm’s way each and every day in order to protect those who cannot protect themselves and maintain order in a society that has become increasingly violent.”

The origin of this week started in 1962, when President John F. Kennedy declared May 15 as National Peace Officers Memorial Day, and the calendar week in which that day falls on as National Police Week. Departments and officers have their own events scheduled throughout this week, many which include memorial services and candlelight vigils.

Regardless of the event, though, this week gives officers a time to think about their profession and citizens a chance to thank the officers for everything they do and sacrifice.

“I would like to personally thank the local citizens who have taken the time to thank us in their own particular ways,” Whitt continued, “whether it is a hand shake and a thank you, to bringing baked goods to the department, to anonymous individuals who have paid for officers meals, it means more to us than one could possibly imagine.”
