A variety of shapes and colors, markers and decorative paints awaited the children who attended the second summer reading program at Windsor Library on Tuesday.

In addition to children from the nearby Windsor Baptist Daycare, other visitors included Austin and Blake Darden, both 6, with their mother, Angel, all of Windsor. Brantley Gray, 4, of Zuni, came in with his mother, Brandi.

Lauren Lombard, branch manager, said about 60 youngsters attended, “which is more or less what we expected,” she added.

Good news for those little ones who didn’t get to the library that morning: the crafts to make and take will be available all week.

As an added bonus, staff volunteers grinded ice and pumped out flavors over sno-cones. Many happy faces were stained with bubble gum, orange and banana flavors, to name a few.

The summer reading program will continue with weekly events through Tuesday, Aug. 2. Planned events include Batworld, an exhibition celebrating the nocturnal animals, and JB Rattles Snake Show on July 12 and July 19, respectively, at the Windsor High School Cafeteria.

The summer reading program has set a 10 book-a-week goal for those children reading picture books, and two chapter books or teen-level books for older readers.

As Lombard said last week, there’s still time to sign up, so come on down!
