Youth enrolled in summer recreational programs for the counties of Charles City and Surry, as well as youth from the Franklin Summer Super Jam, all assembled in mass numbers to the Surry County Recreation Center on July 21. The occasion was the annual Fun Day that has been a longtime annual event of recreational activities for those areas. Each year the event rotates between the participating localities, and for 2016 Surry County Parks & Recreation served as the host locality.
This year’s activities featured track, rope pulling, basketball and inflatables by 3 A’s of Franklin. The activity that seemed the most popular of the day was the old-fashioned rope pull. Each summer program took its turn in the contest and by age groups to attempt to pull their opponent across the established point. The Franklin teams won their share of pulls, but were also seen being dragged across the line in defeat.
In all, the day proved to be successful for all of the localities because no score was kept, no won-or-lost records and all youth that participated had a great day of just fun and fellowship.
The Franklin Summer Super Jam program is sponsored by the Franklin Boys & Girls Club of Southeast Virginia & the Franklin Department of Parks & Recreation.
