High standards needed in schools

It’s the start of the Labor Day weekend, which can mean only one thing’s in store for countless adults and children alike: School begins on Tuesday.
Sorry, kids. Not writing those words won’t make it go away. But writing them doesn’t bring it any closer. Or does it? Either way, the fact is that a few more days remain before teachers and students to come together in their respective classrooms and begin a new year of educating and learning.
We know that the Isle of Wight County school division has gotten revved up through its recent convocation, and plans this year to incorporate what it calls the Five C’s — communication, collaboration, critical thinking, creativity and citizenship — into lessons. That shows great initiative and promise on their part.
Doubtless Franklin and Southampton school systems also have set their standards high for faculty and students alike. And that’s what’s needed here in Western Tidewater and beyond. Teachers, parents and students aiming high to present and receive the best education possible.
Be like the little train that said while struggling uphill, “I think I can. I think I can.” Eventually, it did.
And so can you.
