A 3-year-old Franklin boy died in a crash on Route 58 on Sunday afternoon.

The crash happened at 2:11 p.m. and involved two passenger vehicles, according to a city press release. A Toyota passenger vehicle was traveling eastbound on Route 58 near the Wilroy Road exit when it lost control, went over the grass median and collided with a Mazda minivan that was traveling westbound.

Four occupants of the Mazda minivan, from Cary, North Carolina, were treated and released from Sentara Obici Hospital, according to the press release.

The toddler and his mother were in the Toyota. The mother remains hospitalized at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital with serious injuries. Next of kin have been notified of the boy’s death, the press release stated. The family resides in Franklin.

Portions of the road were closed until 7:45 p.m., when the westbound lanes were reopened.

The investigation remains ongoing, according to the press release. City spokeswoman Diana Klink said on Monday that the city does not identify juvenile victims of crashes.
