To the Editor:

The residents of the City of Franklin should be proud of the tireless and dedicated services provided by our local Fire and Rescue Squad and our Police Department. These departments work collaboratively to protect and serve our citizens while receiving minimal recognition for jobs well done. Let’s change that! When you encounter members of these departments, please extend a heartfelt and gracious “Thank You” for their service to our City.

In the past five months, we have had two situations that exemplify selfless responses members of our Public Safety Departments have demonstrated to the sanctity of life and guardianship of our citizens.  On May 7, while responding to a structure fire with the fire department, Cpl. Butts and Officer Snow were informed a person was inside the smoke-filled apartment. Without regard for their personal safety, the two officers were able to gain access, locate the resident and assist him in exiting the toxic environment. Without intervention from these two officers, it is highly likely the resident would have become overcome with smoke and lost his life.

Recently on Sept. 5, Officer Stephanie Sumpter responded to an emergency call along with medics for a year-old child choking. Upon her arrival and before the medics arrived, the emergency had changed to a child not breathing.

wImmediately, the officer began lifesaving measures and after several attempts was able to restore the child’s breathing. The child was transferred to the medics and transported to the hospital for observation. Because of Officer Sumpter’s quick response, a tragedy involving a child was averted.

As mayor, I am proud and appreciative of the work all of City Departments perform to ensure the safety and welfare of all our citizens.
