NORFOLK — Alvin Artis of Shadywood Road, Norfolk, departed this earthly life on Dec. 10, 2016 while resting peacefully in his home.  He was born on Aug. 1, 1946 in Southampton County to the late Henry and Elnora Jones McKinley.

For many years, Alvin was a member of Mount Carmel Missionary Baptist Church. He retired from the Naval Base as a Steeldoe in July, 2011 after more than 20 years of service. He was a member of International Association of Machinist and Aerospace Workers # 97 Local Lodge.

Alvin leaves to cherish his memory, his wife, Priscilla B. Artis; two sisters, Esmond Artis, Mae Bell Artis and one brother, Calvin Artis, many nieces, nephews and cousins.

A homegoing celebration will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 17, 2016, Mount Carmel Missionary Baptist Church, 1100 Church Street, Norfolk, where Bishop C.V. Russell, Jr. is the pastor. The family will receive friends 30 minutes prior to the service. The committal, military honors and the benediction will be held at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens.
