Isle of Wight County announced on Monday that Amy M. Ring, the county’s current assistant director of economic development, will become the county’s new planning and zoning director effective Jan. 1, 2017.

According to Assistant County Administrator Don Robertson, Ring’s background includes over 19 years of professional experience in planning, zoning and economic development. In addition to her current county position, has previously served as interim director and business development manager of economic development and assistant director of planning and zoning in the county. Her experience outside of Isle of Wight County includes serving as principal planner with the City of Chesapeake, physical planner II with the Hampton Roads Planning District Commission, and as town planner for the Town of Smithfield.

Her educational background includes a master’s degree in urban and regional planning from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, and a bachelor of arts degree in economics and foreign affairs from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville.

She is a certified planner and member of the American Institute of Certified Planners and the American Planning Association.

She will succeed Richard Rudnicki, the county’s current assistant director of planning and zoning, who has been serving as interim director since late August when the county’s former director, Beverly Walkup, retired after 31 years of service to the county.

According to Robertson, the county has not yet named a replacement for Ring in economic development, and will likely advertise to fill the vacancy in the near future.
