Franklin’s city council will hold a public hearing during its regular scheduled meeting on Monday, Jan. 9 to hear nominations for the two vacant seats on the Franklin City Public Schools school board. The meeting and hearing will be held at 7 p.m. in the council chambers of city hall, 207 W. Second Ave., Franklin.

According to City Manager R. Randy Martin, anyone appointed to the ward four or five seats will only serve until the current term for each seat expires. For the ward four seat, that date is June 30, 2018, and for ward five, June 30, 2019. Those appointed will be eligible for reappointment for full terms when their current terms expire.

Anyone desiring to nominate individuals to serve on the school board must make his or her nominations during the public hearing in order for the nominees to be considered. No nominees or applicants whose names are not put forward during the public hearing will be appointed as school board members.

The ward four and five vacancies come as a result of a city council resolution passed in November demanding the resignation of all members of the immediate past school board following the discovery of a $480,000-plus deficit in the board’s budget for fiscal year 2015-2016. All board members complied with the resolution and a public hearing was held in late November to fill the vacated seats, but no nominations were made for ward four and council rejected the sole nominee for ward five.
