COURTLAND
The Southampton County High School Indians after trailing in most of the game fought hard in the final minutes of the game to take a 42-40 win over the Colonials of Colonial Heights in a game at Southampton County High School on Saturday.

It was a tough up-hill fight for the entire game as the Colonial led for the majority. The Colonials opened quickly and took the lead and were up 12-7 at the end of the first quarter. Offensively, the Indians scored their most points of the game, 14 in the second quarter, and by the end of the half trailed the Colonials 23-21. By the end of the third quarter the Colonials were only ahead 34-32.

Early in the fourth quarter Indian Darius Bell tied the game at 34 all. Both teams continued in trading baskets as the time on the clock continued to wind down. At 1:30 p.m., the score was tied again at 40 all. With :40 remaining in the game, Kee-Sean Carr scored to put the home team ahead for the first time in the game, 42-40.

With :13 left on the clock, the Colonials had the ball and a time out. Returning to play, the Colonials released a shot that missed and the Indians got the rebound.

In the excitement of the rebound, an Indian released a long shot that went into the nets in the ceiling. This turnover gave the ball again to the Colonials with :05 left to play. The Colonials again missed and the horn sounded to end the game.

The Southampton County High School Indians head coach Sharone Bailey commented after the game, “It started out ugly, but my guys grinded it out — we got the stops that we needed. It was a good win, a huge win for us. I am so proud of my guys.”

Kee-Sean Carr was the only Indian only in double figures with 12 points.

For the Colonials, two players were in doubles figures. They were Brandon Smith with 13 points and Deion Stover with 10 points.
