SMITHFIELD
The Isle of Wight County School Board voted unanimously to appoint Jacqueline Carr to the vacant Carrsville seat during a special called meeting of the board, held Tuesday at 6 p.m. in the IWCS central office building.

Carr was named following the conclusion of the board’s interviews with each of the three candidates who had submitted letters of interest last week. The other two candidates were Brian Powell and Tristian MacKinnon-Barnes.

“All three of you folks did an outstanding job and we really appreciate your interest in Isle of Wight County,” said Windsor District representative Julia Perkins to the three candidates.

Carr will serve the remainder of former Carrsville District representative Robert Eley’s term, which will expire on Dec. 31 of this year. At that time, she may choose to run for reelection.

Eley resigned from the board at the conclusion of the December 2016 meeting, citing increased demands from his job and little time to spend with his family as his reasons.

In other business conducted during the meeting, the board voted unanimously to approve the proposal of the construction company RRMM for renovations to Windsor and Smithfield high schools.

The next regular scheduled meeting of the Isle of Wight School Board will be on Thursday, Feb. 9, at 6 p.m. in the board room of the Isle of Wight County Courthouse complex.
