Franklin City Council continues to make progress in filling positions for a new school board, we’re pleased to say. On Monday, the members voted for Marchelle Williams to take the seat for ward 4. She’s a former teacher at Greensville County, and now working as a case manager for the Western Tidewater Community Services Board.

Already there’s a new candidate nominated for ward 5, who is a Franklin High graduate working on a degree in English with an endorsement in education; she’s also a licensed minister.

We’re reminded that during the paper’s recent conversation with school board chairman Bob Holt and interim superintendent Kelvin Edwards Sr. pointed out the diversity that already exists on the board.

They include people with experience in education, business and mental health, all which can contribute to asking insightful questions and making informed decisions.

Council is commended for taking its time to find people willing to bring not only their expertise and experience to the table, but also their energy and time to the important task of guiding the school division.

Further, both Holt and Edwards have noted that the board members so far have shown a remarkable willingness to get along and work together.

That cooperative spirit will also ultimately benefit the city.
