Chowan Hawks earn golf honors at tournament

MURFREESBORO, N.C.
Billy Britton and fellow golfers from Chowan University earlier this week returned as winners from the CIAA Southern Divisional Championship at the Warrior Golf Club near China Grove, North Carolina. Coach Mike Ordnung confirmed that Britton won the medal after two days of play. According to the university’s website, Britton shot a 74 field low in round two and ended with a two-day total of 149.
His fellow players on the team, on which he is captain, are Dale Davis (85), Rich Edwards (83), Christian Fleetwood (79), Jordan Francis (79) and Steven Rhinard (77).
As a team, the Hawks also won third place out of the eight participating teams.

Britton, 22, and fellow Hawks already knows the thrill of winning at golf. The coach remembered that he had won a tournament at Sleepy Hole in Suffolk during his sophomore year, and in 2016 the team claimed the championship for the first time.
“He was my best finisher last year … a program highlight,” said Ordnung. “He was very instrumental in the program for the past two to three years. He’s a pleasure to coach.”
The 22-year-old college senior said he was also quite happy with the tournament play and victories.
“It was very satisfying. Very rewarding,” said Britton.
He thankfully credits his father, Stan Britton of Conway, North Carolina, for having introduced him to the game when he was a boy. Cecil Britton, his grandfather, has also been an influence. No less important in the young man’s life is his mother, Debbie Pope of Sedley, where he lives.
Watching the game on television is also a passion and enjoys following careers of many players such as Tiger Woods.
A graduate of Southampton High School, where he also played baseball and basketball, Britton is now at the university majoring in sports management, learning the business end of professional sports. Following graduation, he’ll work at the Cypress Cove Country Club in Franklin for the summer as he seeks out full-time employment in his field.
The Hawks will have another opportunity to play as they are scheduled to host the CIAA Northern Divisional Tournament, beginning today and continuing through Tuesday, March 28, in Snow Hill, North Carolina.
