The Western Tidewater Free Clinic announced on Wednesday that Dr. Steven P. Greer, MD, FACP will join the Clinic as its new medical director.

Greer is a native of Syracuse, NY and graduated with distinction with a Bachelor of Science degree from Clarkson University in 1990.

After finishing his undergraduate degree, Greer worked for the American Red Cross in New York as a medical technician and then as an associate scientist in diagnostics in Massachusetts.

In 1997, he entered Eastern Virginia Medical School, graduating in 2001 as a doctor of medicine.

He completed his post-graduate residency training in internal medicine at EVMS, serving as chief resident from 2004 to 2005 until relocating his family to Cape Carteret, North Carolina, when his wife received a change of station to Camp Lejeune.

Greer practiced as an internal medicine physician for five years in North Carolina and for three more in Delaware before returning to EVMS in 2013 as an assistant professor and hospitalist with the Eastern Virginia Medical School Medical Group in the Department of Internal Medicine, working at Sentara Norfolk General.

Greer has been acknowledged in the medical community for his work, including being honored with the EVMS James P. Baker Award as the outstanding graduating resident in internal medicine in 2004 and receiving first place in oral presentation at the Virginia Chapter Scientific Meeting of the American College of Physicians.

Greer also has experience volunteering, as a floor assistant in the emergency department at Massachusetts General Hospital, as a clerical assistant to those with visual impairments and as a youth sports coach.

“We feel fortunate Dr. Greer will be sharing his expertise with the patients we serve here at Western Tidewater Free Clinic,” said Chet Hart, WTFC’s executive director.

“He will be a great addition to our Clinic team and believes in the mission of our staff and volunteers to provide our patients with the best medical care possible.”

The Clinic provides non-emergency healthcare to residents of the Western Tidewater area who could otherwise not afford it. They are a 501c3 nonprofit and provided comprehensive health services to almost 1,400 patients in 2016 in a record-breaking number of visits: 18,022.

Greer will begin his full-time responsibilities as the Clinic’s medical director in August. He lives in Suffolk with his wife and three children.
