Eight members of the GFWC Tarrara Woman’s Club packaged 10 Easter baskets for local families filled with food purchased via the club’s “Change for Change” project during their meeting on Wednesday, April 12.
The project began in October 2016 when Laurel E. Livingston, the club’s president, asked members to donate their spare change each month during club meetings into a collection tin. The club was initially planning on raising enough money to provide food baskets for two to four families but ended up raising enough for 10. During the club’s anniversary banquet in December, Livingston also challenged guests and honorees to participate in the program, and gave a small gift to the two guests who donated the largest amount of change.
In addition to the change donations, each month, club members were also asked to bring specific food items such as vegetables, Jell-O and baking mix. By the final coin collection in March, the change donations totaled approximately $237, well above the club’s expectations.
To fill each basket to capacity, the club used the donations to purchase additional food staples, including 10 hefty hams purchased at cost from the Boykins Butcher Block. Each basket was adorned with a ribbon and an Easter greeting card, and then delivered to random families on April 13 and 14.
