The inaugural Run/Walk to End Domestic Violence is scheduled to take place rain or shine on Saturday, April 29, at Paul D. Camp Community College. Money raised from registration fees, T-shirt sales and any other donations will go toward the Genieve Shelter. That place is, according to its website, dedicated to helping families and individuals escape domestic violence, human trafficking, sexual assault and stalking.

The Franklin Tri-County Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. is co-hosting the program with the shelter. The goal is to raise $5,000, and sponsors and businesses are also welcome to contribute.

Although the upcoming event is new for the area sorors, working to prevent and end domestic violence is “one of our [sorority’s] national initiatives.” said chapter president Angela Artis, “So each year we donate money or items such clothes, toiletries and toys during Christmas.”

Signups can be done on site and start at 9 a.m. with the event starting at 10 a.m. Registration is $15 per person; with a T-shirt at $25; T-shirts at $10 each.

Vendors will be present, selling such items as jewelry, oils and wreaths.

The sorority will also help to raise funds through the sale of hotdogs, chips and drinks.

Kisha Watford, program chairwoman, said that organizing the run/walk started about a year ago.

“We had planned to do this last year, but other things came up,” she said.

The walking trail at the college will be used, and participants can travel for approximately one mile, looping as many times as desired.

The MC Poker Run, another first for the shelter, will take place that same day, beginning at CrossPointe Church in Suffolk, and arriving at the college in Franklin.
