Girl Scouts from Troop 1707, sponsored by the High Street Methodist Church, have earned their Bronze Award, which is the highest honor girls can earn at the Junior level – fourth and fifth grades. When girls go for the Bronze Award, they represent what Girl Scouts can achieve in their communities. It involves completing a “Journey of Choice,” a minimum of 20 hours building your team, exploring your community, choosing your project, planning it, putting your plan in motion and spreading the word. The journey that the girls chose to work on was “Women Making a Difference” in the world. Each of them chose different projects to work on for their Bronze Award.

Rachel Blythe, Alexandra Piper and Katrina Draughn did their Bronze project on putting together bags for the women’s shelter in our area. These bags consisted of necessities such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, soap, tissue, razors, lotions and a small blanket the girls made themselves.

The girls felt like this would benefit women in the shelters because sometimes they are leaving their homes in the middle of the night on the spur of the moment without anything they might need.

Sophia Hewitt has always had a love of reading and children. So, she decided to create weekend book bags. She put together 12 canvas cinch sacks each containing three brand new books. The money was raised through local donations made by the Grace Memorial United Methodist Women, the Sedley Woman’s Club and members of the community. The bags were blessed and given to Grace’s Little Angels of Grace Memorial Methodist Church to be used in their 4-year-old preschool program.

Madison Anderson did her Bronze project on healthy snacks. She provided fruit, granola bars and Cheerios for the children ages 1-5 at her church every Sunday for over two months.

Lydia Cleaton plans to work on her Bronze project by cleaning up the beaches this summer while vacationing. She will work several hours each day on the beach cleaning up trash.

These girls have earned their Bronze Award with courage, confidence and character. They want to continue to make a difference in the world around them. We have some great future leaders.

Troop 1707 wants to make a difference not only in the world but in there own small community. The girls are looking forward to working on their Silver and Gold awards in the future.
