WINDSOR
On June 26, the Windsor Longhorns won the 2017 East Zone Baseball Bronco Virginia State Tournament.
On their way to the championship game, the Longhorns outscored Southampton-Sussex 19-5; Southern Chesapeake 19-4; and Western Branch 14-5. Battling back from the loser’s bracket, Western Branch reached the championship game to once again face the Longhorns.
In the championship game, the Longhorns outscored their opponent 8-0 through five innings; however, Western Branch would not go down without a fight as they rattled off five runs in the top of the sixth inning. The Longhorns answered adding two runs of their own in the bottom of the sixth inning making the score 10-5.
The seventh would be an epic inning as Western Branch scored six more runs in the top of the inning to take their first lead of the game at 11-10.
Needing two runs to secure the victory and the state title, the Longhorns number four batter lead off the bottom of the seventh inning with a walk.
The second batter got a base hit to left field advancing the lead runner to third base. With runners on first and third base, the number six batter smashed a single to left center field.
The hit, coupled with an error by the left fielder, scored the needed two runs for the Longhorns to win the game and, ultimately, the 2017 East Zone Baseball Bronco Virginia State Tournament.
