David C. Davis

COURTLAND — David “Dave” Clinton Davis departed this life on Friday, Aug. 4, 2017, in Vibra Hospital, Richmond, Virginia. He was born on June 11, 1944, in Surry, Virginia, to the late Nady L. Higginbotham and the late Will Abner Davis.
Dave attended Hickory Grove Elementary School in Surry. He later moved to Washington, D.C., to attend McFarland Junior High and Roosevelt Senior High School.
He joined the Navy and was honorably discharged in the late 1960s, and continued his service as a reservist in the Navy until the early 1980s, when duty led him to California. Dave worked at Port Hueneme Naval Base, California, as the supervisor of engineering for public works.
After returning to the East Coast in 1994, to Harrisonburg, Virginia, he continued his federal service as a civil servant at the Naval Security Group of Sugar Grove, West Virginia, as director of maintenance. Dave retired in 2002 after 32 years of federal service, and relocated to Courtland, Virginia.
Dave leaves to cherish his memory his devoted and beloved wife of 34 years, Joan W. Davis; three daughters; Anya, Nneka and Tyra; two sons, Jemal and Patrick; one brother; Sammy L. Davis; one sister, Dorothy M. Blackwell; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
Viewing will take place on Thursday, Aug. 10, from 5 to 7 p.m., in Poole’s Funeral Home, 8721 Colonial Trail East, Smithfield, Virginia. The homegoing service will be on Friday, Aug. 11, at 11 a.m., in Main Street Baptist Church, Smithfield, with the Rev. James Harrison being the eulogist.
