Under the shade of trees and tents on Aug. 5, more than a dozen regional artisans and craftsmen presented their handiwork at the seasonal First Saturdays Artisan Market. This monthly array is located at Gallery 1606, which is on the corner of Main Street and Southampton Parkway (Route 58W) in the town of Capron.

Handcrafted pens and wooden spoons, jewelry, ornaments, photographs, knitted or crocheted items, homemade soaps and lotion, as well as art were among the featured wares.

Shelley Stieh of Heirlooms in Glass in Southampton County brought her colorful creations. Right next to her was her former “pupil,” Nancy Cocco of Suffolk, who also had stained glass of her own.

For visitors who got hungry while shopping, the Hardy Family of Sedley sold Indian tacos and fry bread among other satisfying food and beverages.

Ernestine Barnes and friends offered potato jacks fried on the spot.

From nearby Gurganus Farms, Brandon Applewhite and his sons Brock, 7, and Jayden, 12, brought fresh produce of cantaloupes, corn, tomatoes and watermelons for sale.

In addition, Gallery 1606 also features more handcrafted items, such as pottery made by the Nottoway Indians’ chief, Lynette Allston. Yards away is the interpretive center for the tribe, which includes not only history and artifacts, but also offers classes in culture and crafts.

Entry to the market is free for both customers and vendors, although the latter must make reservations for spaces.

Gallery 1606 is at 18001 Southampton Parkway, the corner of Highway 58 and Main Street, Capron.

The next market will be on Saturday, Sept. 2, and last from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event is also scheduled to take place on Oct. 7 at the same time.
