The Town of Courtland and the Southampton County Historical Society are again considering the possibility of creating a historic district within the town’s borders.

Courtland’s town council and the Historical Society plan to hold a joint meeting to consider the matter on Tuesday, Sept. 12, at 5:30 p.m., in the Southampton County boardroom, located at 26022 Administration Center Drive.

According to Wynn McDaniel, a member of the Historical Society, the Society filed an application several years ago to have a district of the town listed on the National Register of Historic Places and the Virginia Landmarks Register. Virginia’s Department of Historic Resources has recently dusted off that application and plans to send two representatives to tour the town and meet with residents.

“We did present this to the town council of Courtland in July and they’re very supportive,” McDaniel said, adding that the joint meeting would be an informational session only and would include time for questions.

At the meeting, Elizabeth Lipford, one of the representatives from DHR, will present on the history of the project, beginning with the survey done in 2000, the DHR’s most recent determination of Courtland’s eligibility, what it means to be a state and national historic district and what it does not mean, and the next steps in the process.
