COURTLAND
The Board of Directors of Mahone’s Tavern and Museum is sponsoring a local history seminar on Sunday, Sept. 17, in the Southampton County Administration Building on Main Street in Courtland. This will be from 2 to 4 p.m.

There will be an intermission during which refreshments will be served.

The topics of the seminar will be: The Joint Expedition Against Franklin; The Action at Crumpler’s Bluff; The Blackwater Line; and William Mahone and Mahone’s Tavern. The selected topics are subjects of exhibits at the tavern’s museum, located at 22341 Main St., Courtland.

The lecturer will be John V. Quarstein, USS Monitor Center at the Mariner’s Museum director emeritus. He’s an award-winning historian, preservationist, lecturer and author of 15 books, one of which received the 2012 Henry Adams Prize for excellence in historical literature.

Quarstein has also produced, narrated and written for several PBS documentaries, including the film series, “Civil War in Hampton Roads,” a 2007 Silver Telly Award winner.

Admission is $10, a tax-deductible donation for adults; and $5, a tax-deductible donation for students.
