The Paul D. Camp Community College Hurricanes baseball team will play its first game ever this afternoon against the Apprentice School at the War Memorial Stadium in Hampton at 4:30 p.m.

Paul D. Camp’s head baseball coach and athletic director David Mitchell said the game will be “unofficial” and part of an eight-week evaluation period, which will be similar to spring training for professional baseball teams or pre-season football games.

“It gives us as coaches a chance to hold a walk-on tryout period and gives us a chance during these eight weeks to evaluate the players that we have to see where we can best utilize them for our spring season, which starts in February,” Mitchell said. “It basically gives us as coaches a chance to see how the players and student athletes are going to respond when the lights get turned on and when the umpires and officials are there.”

He added that the Apprentice School and the others listed on Paul D. Camp’s athletic schedule for the fall 2017 semester are going through their own evaluation seasons, so all games this fall will be considered scrimmage games.

Additional games scheduled for the fall semester are as follows:

• Sept. 20, 3:30 p.m. vs. Chowan University

• Sept. 29, 4:30 p.m. vs. the Apprentice School at War Memorial Stadium

• Oct. 8, 11 a.m. vs. Thomas Nelson Community College at Heritage High School

• Oct. 13, 2 p.m. vs. Stratford University

• Oct. 21, noon vs. Smithfield High School

• Oct. 23-25 for the Blue Gold Hurricane World Series, location and time to be determined

• Oct. 31 for a Halloween Costume Scrimmage, location and time to be determined

The Hurricanes are in their second week of practice, having started on Sept. 5.
