Cody Peyton’s foul shots with 2.6 seconds left in the game preserved Peninsula Catholic’s 60-53 win over Isle of Wight Academy last Tuesday, Nov. 28.

Teammate Will Candella made another pair of free throws with 11 seconds left to help his team’s cause. The game was tightened considerably by a pair of late three-pointers — one by Brandon Casey with 30 seconds left that cut the lead to 4 points, 54-50, and another by William Fricke with 13 seconds remaining that cut the Peninsula lead to 3, 56-53.

Casey and teammate Grant Worthy led the Chargers in scoring with 16 points each. They also accounted for half of the game’s made baskets from beyond the three-point line.

IWA was handicapped by a slow start. They were outpaced by Peninsula 15-4 in the game’s opening quarter. The Chargers rebounded to claim the second and fourth quarters, losing the third by a slim margin, 17-14.

IWA made the most of its opportunities from the foul line, making 7 of 9 attempts from the stripe. Peninsula was more successful in terms of getting to the line and making good on their chances, going 12-for-17 for the game.

The loss dropped the Chargers to 0-2 on the young season. They next travel to Walsingham Academy for a game on Thursday, Dec. 7.
