FRANKLIN
A Franklin man accused of intentionally hitting a woman with a car has been charged with malicious wounding.

According to Capt. Tim Whitt, spokesman for the Franklin Police Department, the suspect and victim had been drinking together on Aug. 11 in the 300 block of Harrison Street and got into an argument, which turned violent. The man, Darrell Sykes, 30, of 409 Hogart St., allegedly began punching the woman, and then got into a 2002 Ford Explorer and backed up at a high rate of speed, pinning her between two other vehicles as she was dragged across the street.

Police say Sykes backed into a total of three vehicles parked on Harrison Street, causing extensive damage to them, and then fled the scene on foot. Officers responded to the scene of the crime at 6:02 p.m. that same day.

The woman was transported to Southampton Memorial Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

Police located Sykes at his residence on Hogart Street and took him into custody.

In addition to the malicious wounding charge, he was also charged with felony domestic assault, felony hit and run and driving on a suspended license.

Sykes was remanded to the Western Tidewater Regional Jail without bond.
