PORTSMOUTH
Hunter Edwards rushed for 152 yards and scored a touchdown as Isle of Wight Academy knocked off rival Portsmouth Christian on Friday night, 42-0.

Quarterback Ryan Boyce ran for two scores, passed for another and was 7-for-15 passing as IWA (2-0) held PCS (0-2) to 119 yards of total offense.

For their part, the Chargers rolled up 308 yards in offense, 228 of which came on the ground. Edwards had his second-consecutive game near 150 yards rushing, running for 152 yards on 15 carries. He had 140 yards last week against Atlantic Shores.

Versus PCS, Edwards also led the IWA defense in tackles with 16. Teammate Kody Kosiorek, a sophomore linebacker, had 15. They were the only two IWA defenders in double figures, though 10 others registered at least one takedown each.

After their opening drive was cut short by a fumble, IWA held PCS short of the goal line three times from inside the Chargers’ 5-yard line. They took over possession at their own 5 and ran 13 plays but failed to advance beyond their own 39.

Another futile Patriots’ possession set Isle of Wight up at their 43 and, six plays later, Boyce ran it in from the one. A Tre Powell PAT made the score 7-0.

A Charger interception of an errant Portsmouth Christian pass gave IWA another chance at the PCS 37. Aided by a 15-yard penalty on the Patriots, IWA finally cashed in on an 8-yard run by Edwards. The PAT made it 14-0.

IWA scored on its next four drives. On IWA’s next possession, Edwards’ 41-yard run did the heavy lifting, and Boyce hit Odin Bristol on a nifty 2-yard fade to make the score 20-0. Then Zack Stroud ran it in from a yard away to make the score 27-0.

Colby Williams rambled 45 yards for the next score and Boyce dashed in from 3 yards to make it, after the PAT, 42-0.

The Chargers will host undefeated Fredericksburg Christian on Friday at 7 p.m. at William Hooper Field. Fredericksburg has had plenty of scoring in its two wins over Portsmouth Christian (55-13) and Fuqua (53-6.) It will be the Eagles’ second trip to Hampton Roads and its third road game in three weeks.

IWA lost to Fredericksburg 21-7 a year ago in a game played in the Eagles’ nest in Northern Virginia. The squads also were both 2-0 coming in to last year’s contest.
