The Virginia Department of Transportation’s Hampton Roads District will open an area command center beginning at 8 p.m. today to coordinate and direct the agency’s response to regional impacts from Hurricane Florence. The command center will operate around the clock until the threat has passed.

Communications staff will be working the command center to update the public and news outlets on changes in road conditions and service at the Jamestown-Scotland Ferry.

Updates will also be posted to the District’s social media channels on Twitter, Facebook and Nextdoor. Real-time road conditions and interstate cameras are available at 511Virginia.org.

VDOT reiterated that it has no plans to close any of its bridges or tunnels in Hampton Roads at this time, and that the eastbound lanes of I-64 will not be reversed in advance of this storm. VDOT closes bridges, ramps or roads only when there is imminent danger to public safety, such as high water, structural damage or downed trees and debris blocking the roadway.
