BLACKSTONE
William Fricke and Tre Powell both scored 17 points as Isle of Wight Academy’s boys varsity basketball team defeated Kenston Forest here, 63-41, on Nov. 27.

The Chargers trailed the Kavaliers 28-25 at halftime, but bounced back with an 18-5 third quarter. Sophomore Russ Wells put IWA ahead for good with his field goal early in the period. Fricke had 12 of his 17 points in that span, including a 3-pointer and 7-of-8 foul shots, including four on a flagrant technical foul by a Kenston player that sent the lanky IWA junior sprawling on the court.

IWA Chargers also proved they could hold a lead once they’d attained it, outscoring Kenston 20-8 in the final period. Powell had 7 of his 17 points in that stretch.

Seniors Josh Savage and Hunter Hayden each had 7 points for the Chargers.

IWA had been plagued by inconsistency at the foul line in last year’s 7-16 campaign, when they made 144 of 245 attempts (59 percent.) Against Kenston (3-3), they were 18-for-24 (75 percent.)

The Chargers visited Walsingham on Monday, hosted Tidewater Academy on Tuesday and Fuqua on Thursday. All games begin at 7 p.m.

The IWA girls team defeated Kenston Forest (0-4) 48-22 in IWA’s season opener on Tuesday at home.

This week, the Lady Chargers traveled to Walsingham on Monday, and hosted Tidewater Academy on Tuesday. They hosted Fuqua on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.

Walsingham enters the game with a 0-2 record after their 53-23 non-league loss to Cape Henry Collegiate.
