Ruth H. Phelps

FRANKLIN — Ruth Vaughan Harrell “Granny” Phelps, 92, went to be with the Lord on Dec. 9, 2018, with her family by her side.
Mrs. Phelps was a native of Rich Square, North Carolina, and was a daughter of the late Oliver and Pennie Shoulars Harrell. She was also predeceased by her husband, Chelsie James “CJ” Phelps Jr.; a granddaughter, Amy Ruth Phelps; and a sister, Lela Kate Hanson.
Mrs. Phelps was a graduate of Murfreesboro High School and the University of North Carolina Women’s College in Greensboro. She was a former home economics teacher in Creswell, North Carolina; Holland, Virginia; and Southampton County, Virginia.
She was a member of Franklin Congregational Christian Church, and enjoyed boating, camping, her little dog, Biscuit, sewing, and painting with her son at John Taylor’s Studio in Suffolk, Virginia.
Survivors include one son, Rod Phelps and his wife, Tricia; a brother, Lloyd Harrell and his wife, Martha; a special brother-in-law, Ashley Phelps and his wife, Judy; one grandson, Ben Phelps and his wife, Candy; and four great-grandchildren, Ethan, Benjamin, Davis and Logan; and many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank all the aides and nurses on the East Wing of the East Pavilion for their wonderful care.
The memorial service will be at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 11, in the Franklin Congregational Christian Church with the Rev. James H. Hyatt Jr. officiating.
