To the Editor:

In the Democratic Primary to be held on June 9, 2009, the clear choice for governor is my friend, Senator Creigh Deeds.

At the threshold, let us consider candidates. Brian Moran has fought courageously and ably for the people of Virginia in the House of Delegates. He is a great leader and may, in time, become governor. Unfortunately, his base is Northern Virginia, and the reality of this election is that he is being pushed aside by someone without a record in Virginia politics, but with a great deal of money. Although it is unfair that Moran’s strength is diluted by someone who has never served Virginia, at least in the General Assembly or otherwise by elected office, this is what is occurring.

In contrast, my friend, Sen. Deeds, has waged the good battle on behalf of all Virginians as Commonwealth’s Attorney of Bath County, in the House of Delegates, and now in the Senate of Virginia. Four years ago he came within a handful of votes in the Attorney General’s race. Now, he offers his years of experience, his God given ability, and his unqualified love of Virginia in the Democratic Primary. He deserves our support.

Not only has he been a champion of education, but he has been a passionate champion of the environment and of outdoor sports. He was the driving force behind the right to hunt amendment to the Virginia Constitution and there is no greater ally of hunters, fishermen and others who seek outdoor recreation in the General Assembly than Senator Deeds.

I ask that the voters in Southside Virginia exercise this wonderful opportunity to elect Deeds.
