MURFREESBORO, N.C.

The Chowan University athletic department hosted the 10th annual Play4Kay game in conjunction with the women’s basketball program and CU Student-Athlete Advisory Committee on Feb. 13 in the Helms Center.

This event is intended to raise cancer awareness along with money dedicated for research. The Play4Kay campaign has raised over $4.8 million to support women’s cancer research since its inception in 2007.

The theme for this year is “Hope Comes In All Colors!”

During halftime of the game between the Lady Hawks versus the Lady Trojans of Virginia State University, survivors/caretakers walked between a giant wall of student athletes around the basketball court. Afterward, they all had an opportunity to tell their cancer survivor story.

Sharing in this event along with many others was Tim Grant of Franklin. His wife Tracy had been honored to lead the survivors walk during the event in 2017.

Tim was invited to come and speak, and stated that he was the first between the two of them to be diagnosed with cancer; his was testicular. After treatment he became a survivor.

But shortly after the cure of the disease, his wife soon became ill and, after much diagnosis, she was discovered with cancer. Tracy died in November 2018.

Tim advised everyone to get regular health checkups.
